Why Every Mom Needs a “Real Camera” at Home: Creating Beautiful Everyday Photos

Seasonal photos can feel like way too much, and even with years of experience as a portrait photographer, I have avoided doing them myself more than I’d like to admit. My favorite images and sessions are always the ones I don’t think too much about. The ones where I decide to shoot a few photos on the tripod on my way out the door to Home Goods. Denim and rain boots was our theme with 30 seconds to think on it.

I think everyone should own an easy little point and shoot. I use my little canon point and shoot camera for everything now. From quick and easy family portraits, to travel photos, and touring local wineries, a good camera makes ALL the difference in your documentation.

Before you get me started on how your iPhone can shoot just as well, allow me to show you the difference. It’s subtle, and yes, a lot of the ‘professional look’ comes from editing. But the intention you have when you’re holding a ‘real camera’ in your hands is something I’ll swear by.

  • Start with a solid camera (mine is below!)

  • Follow the light (and if it’s sunny and bright, shoot just outside of direct light or with the sun behind you)

  • Keep your edits natural!

Happy shooting this holiday season. :)
